my vote counts?

i usually hate these just cause they are annoying as crap, but this one was actually pretty funny only because of borat. he does have some incredible lines in it. but i mainly hate these cause they make you feel like you vote for the president actually counts… it doesnt. thanks to the electoral college vote you really dont have any say on who becomes president. if you dont believe me look at the 2000 election results here.

according to wikipedia…

“In the American system of presidential elections, the electoral vote determines the winner, and Bush won this count, although Gore received the most votes (called the “popular vote”).”

i dont understand how you can become president without the popular vote, its a bit weird if you ask me.

One Response to my vote counts?

  1. Erik Ruch says:

The reason why the “popular vote” doesn’t count is for three reasons.

    1. The framers of the Constitution were terrified of the average voter — and this is when only landed men could vote. Imagine how they would have felt about women, wage slaves and minorities voting. The electoral college was seen as a way to buffer any populist revolution.

    2. The framers of the Constitution were also pretty freaked over the concept of political parties. Supposedly the electoral college was one of the ways to prevent their institution. Nice to see that worked out well — we only really have two we have to worry about…

    3. Why would you want government operated out in the open where anyone could see what is going on? That’s just crazy talk.
